How we chose these tools

This comparison draws on documented product capabilities, recurring themes across G2 and Capterra review samples, vendor pricing pages and third-party pricing databases checked in September 2026, and published product documentation. G2 and Capterra ratings and review counts were read from live product pages in September 2026. The assessment is framed for US carriers, owner-operators, and freight brokers. Enterprise shipper TMS suites, pure real-time visibility platforms, and parcel or last-mile-only tools are out of scope. Vendor blogs and vendor comparison pages were not used as neutral evidence.

Best overall for small carriers, owner-operators, and brokers that want proven, affordable dispatch tied to a load board

What's great

  • Purpose-built dispatch for owner-operators, small carriers, brokers, and dual-authority operations, tied directly into the Truckstop load board most of them already use
  • One-click invoicing, settlements, BOLs, and optional IFTA reporting with full QuickBooks sync, so dispatch and accounting stay connected
  • Largest track record in this category, with 50,000-plus users and 299 Capterra reviews at 4.4/5, on flat-rate plans from $50/mo

Watch-outs

  • Interface is utilitarian next to newer cloud tools like Rose Rocket or Alvys
  • IFTA and some add-on modules cost extra on top of the base plan
  • Built for small fleets, so larger multi-branch carriers tend to outgrow it

Truckstop’s ITS Dispatch is the default first shortlist for a small US carrier, owner-operator, or broker, because it does the core dispatch job cheaply and is wired into the Truckstop load board they already use. It carries 299 Capterra reviews at 4.4/5 , and the vendor cites more than 50,000 users, the deepest track record in this set.

The workflow covers load entry, dispatch, BOLs, invoicing, settlements, and optional IFTA, with a QuickBooks integration so the back office is not a second system. Plans are refreshingly concrete: an Owner-Operator tier at $50/mo, a Carrier tier at $75/mo, a TMS Carrier Pro tier at $99/mo, and dual-authority pricing around $105 per user per month.

The trade-off is a plain interface and modules, IFTA especially, that add to the bill. Reviewers who want a modern UI or heavy customization look elsewhere.

Best for small carriers, owner-operators, and brokers that want proven, affordable dispatch tied to a load board. Wrong for large fleets that need deep automation or a modern API-first platform.

Best free option for brokers, owner-operators, and small carriers that want to start at no cost

What's great

  • Genuinely free for up to two users, with load management, dispatch, and basic accounting included and no contract
  • Highest-rated tool here on Capterra at 4.9/5 across 367 reviews, with support reviewers repeatedly call excellent
  • Handles carriers and brokers, with load building, truck dispatch, carrier management, and QuickBooks-friendly invoicing

Watch-outs

  • Independent reviewers say carriers outgrow it past roughly five trucks or heavy daily load volume
  • No native driver mobile app, so tracking relies on SMS or partner ELDs
  • Premium tier jumps to $99 per user per month, so multi-seat teams lose the free-tier advantage

AscendTMS, from InMotion Global, built its reputation on a real free tier, and it is still the strongest no-cost entry point for a broker or small carrier. It holds the highest score in this comparison, 4.9/5 on Capterra across 367 reviews , with load building, dispatch, and invoicing usable on day one without a demo.

The free plan covers up to two users; beyond that the Premium tier is $99 per user per month with no upfront, license, or support fees. For a one- or two-person brokerage or a small carrier, that free-to-cheap path is hard to beat.

The limits are honest ones: reviewers note carriers tend to outgrow it around five trucks, and there is no native driver app, so live tracking leans on SMS or an integrated ELD.

Best for brokers, owner-operators, and small carriers that want to start free and scale slowly. Wrong for growing fleets that need a native driver app and deep automation.

Best AI-native platform for carriers and brokers that want modern dispatch, an open API, and live portals

What's great

  • Modern, AI-native platform with strong order automation and an open API that reviewers single out
  • SOC 2 Type II compliant, unusual among trucking TMS tools, so security controls are independently audited
  • Joins carrier dispatch, brokerage, and customer and partner portals on one system with live status updates

Watch-outs

  • Usage-based pricing can surprise smaller operators; Capterra lists a starting point around $2,080/mo
  • Reviewers cite QuickBooks-sync friction and click-heavy workflows
  • Depth and value show up for mid-size and larger operations, less for a single truck

Rose Rocket is the modern, API-first pick for a carrier or broker that finds legacy dispatch tools dated. It carries 4.4/5 on Capterra across 35 reviews and a higher roughly 4.8/5 on a smaller G2 sample, with praise centered on the interface, bulk-load automation, and integrations.

It is also SOC 2 Type II compliant , which few trucking TMS vendors can claim, and it is backed by a $38M Series B push into enterprise fleet features. Dispatch, brokerage, and shipper and partner portals sit on one platform with live tracking.

The catch is cost and complexity: pricing is usage-based and starts higher than the SMB tools, Capterra lists from about $2,080/mo, and reviewers flag QuickBooks sync and a click-heavy feel.

Best for growing carriers and brokers that want a modern, integrated platform and will use the automation. Wrong for a single owner-operator watching every dollar.

Best cloud-native TMS for growing carriers and brokers that want flat, unlimited-user pricing

What's great

  • Cloud-native TMS with a flat, unlimited-user price and 120-plus integrations, so seat count does not inflate the bill
  • Strong dispatch-to-invoice workflow with load tracking and automated document handling that reviewers praise
  • 4.7/5 on G2 across 17 reviews and 4.4/5 on Capterra across 51, with support singled out

Watch-outs

  • Entry price of roughly $514/mo is steep for a one-truck operation
  • Younger vendor, so the review base is still modest next to Truckstop or Motive
  • Feature depth is aimed at growing fleets and brokerages, less at solo owner-operators

Alvys is a cloud-native TMS built for carriers and brokers that are scaling and tired of per-seat math. Its pricing is flat with unlimited users, starting around $514/mo , and it advertises 120-plus integrations with no setup fees.

On reviews it does well, 4.4/5 on Capterra across 51 reviews and 4.7/5 on G2, with users citing an easy dispatch-to-getting-paid workflow, load tracking, and responsive support.

The flip side is that the flat entry price is real money for a single truck, and the vendor is younger, so the third-party track record is still building.

Best for growing carriers and brokerages that will add seats and want predictable, unlimited-user pricing. Wrong for a solo owner-operator on a tight budget.

Best for small carriers and brokers that want dispatch and the back office in one published-price system

What's great

  • One system for carriers, brokers, and combined operations covering dispatch, customers, admin, and accounting
  • Published per-user tiers at $99, $149, and $199 with no setup fees or contracts and a free trial
  • Free POD Complete mobile app for drivers, plus QuickBooks integration and Samsara ELD on higher tiers

Watch-outs

  • Since the Envase acquisition, reviewers report slower support, some waits of a day or more
  • Capterra sits at 4.2/5, the lowest of the modern SMB tools here
  • Loads are metered per tier (25, 50, unlimited), so growth can force an upgrade

Tailwind is the all-in-one pick for a small carrier or brokerage that wants dispatch and the back office in one place. It holds 4.2/5 on Capterra across 97 reviews , with praise for affordability and ease of training.

Pricing is unusually clear: Pro at $99, Enterprise at $149, and Unlimited at $199 per user per month, with load counts stepping up per tier, no contracts, and a free driver POD app.

The recurring complaint since Envase acquired it is support responsiveness, with several reviewers reporting multi-hour to multi-day waits. Its rating trails the newer cloud tools slightly.

Best for small carriers and brokers that want dispatch plus accounting on published pricing. Wrong for teams that need fast, high-touch support or very high load volume on a low tier.

Best for owner-operators and heavy-haul carriers that want a modern tool with AI document handling

What's great

  • Purpose-built for small carriers and heavy-haul, oversize, and open-deck moves, with AI document handling
  • Highest Capterra score of the modern tools at 4.8/5 across 77 reviews, with 97% rating it 4 stars or higher
  • Dispatch, driver settlements, invoicing, truck tracking, EDI, and QuickBooks in one clean interface

Watch-outs

  • Entry price starts around $290/mo billed annually and rises with trucks, so it is not the cheapest
  • Small, newer vendor with no free tier; evaluation is demo-led with a money-back guarantee
  • Depth is aimed at small-to-mid carriers, not large multi-division fleets or brokerages

Truckbase is a modern, well-liked dispatch platform aimed squarely at small carriers, including the heavy-haul and open-deck operators the mainstream tools underserve. It holds 4.8/5 on Capterra across 77 reviews , the top score among the newer tools here.

It bundles dispatch, driver settlements, invoicing, truck tracking, EDI, and QuickBooks, with AI features that pull data off rate confirmations and documents. Pricing starts around $290/mo billed annually and scales per truck, closer to $490/mo in typical configurations.

The trade-offs are a higher floor than the budget tools, no free tier, and a still-small track record, so evaluation is a demo and a money-back guarantee rather than a free trial.

Best for small carriers, especially heavy-haul and open-deck, that want a modern tool and clean automation. Wrong for brokers or very large fleets, and for buyers who need a free tier.

Best for auto transport and car-hauling carriers and brokers that want purpose-built dispatch

What's great

  • The category standard for auto transport and car-hauling dispatch, tied into the Central Dispatch marketplace
  • Digital BOL, ePOD, VIN scanning, and inspection photos replace paper for carriers and drivers
  • 4.7/5 on Capterra across 48 reviews, with a free carrier Lite plan and SuperPay for faster settlement

Watch-outs

  • Seat pricing from about $55/mo can be hard to justify for the smallest one-truck operations
  • Purpose-built for vehicle transport, so it is not a fit for general freight or reefer and flatbed
  • Some reviewers report support delays and a few less-obvious workflows like canceling loads

Super Dispatch is the specialist pick, the default TMS for auto transport carriers and brokers moving cars rather than pallets. It holds 4.7/5 on Capterra across 48 reviews and connects directly to the Central Dispatch car-hauling marketplace.

The workflow is built around the vehicle: digital bills of lading, electronic proof of delivery, VIN scanning, and inspection photos, plus SuperPay to shorten the wait for money. A free carrier Lite plan lets solo drivers start at no cost, with Carrier Pro from about $55/mo per seat.

The obvious limit is scope: this is car-hauling software, not a general-freight TMS, and seat pricing can pinch the smallest operators.

Best for auto transport carriers and brokers that want purpose-built dispatch and digital paperwork. Wrong for general freight, reefer, or flatbed operations.

Best for fleets that want ELD and HOS compliance, GPS tracking, and dispatch on one platform

What's great

  • Combines ELD and HOS compliance, GPS tracking, AI dashcams, and dispatch in one fleet platform
  • Enormous, credible review base, 4.5/5 on Capterra across 1,688 reviews and 4.4/5 on G2 across 2,600-plus
  • Auto-dispatch factors in hours of service and GPS location before assigning jobs and routing

Watch-outs

  • Dispatch is one module of a telematics platform, not a back-office TMS with billing and settlements
  • Reviewers note dispatch struggles with routes carrying more than about five stops
  • Pricing is quote-only and hardware-dependent, so total cost includes devices and multi-year terms

Motive (formerly KeepTruckin) earns its place as the telematics-first option, best when compliance, tracking, and dispatch should live on one platform. It has by far the largest review base here, 4.5/5 on Capterra across 1,688 reviews and 4.4/5 across 2,600-plus on G2.

Its dispatch is tied to real-time data: the auto-dispatch feature weighs hours of service and GPS position before assigning a job and picks an efficient route. For a fleet already running Motive ELDs and cameras, adding dispatch avoids a second vendor.

The caveat is that Motive is a fleet-operations platform, not a billing-and-settlement TMS, and reviewers say the dispatch tool weakens on multi-stop routes. Pricing is quote-only and tied to hardware and contract length.

Best for fleets that want ELD, tracking, and dispatch unified. Wrong for brokers or carriers who need deep back-office accounting and settlements in the same tool.

Best budget pick for owner-operators that want cheap dispatch plus IFTA and settlements

What's great

  • Owner-operator-friendly pricing from $20/mo, with dispatch, IFTA, settlements, and expense tracking
  • Automates IFTA and fuel-tax filing, a genuine time-saver that reviewers highlight
  • Simple and quick to learn for small trucking businesses running up to about ten trucks

Watch-outs

  • No direct QuickBooks integration, so accounting data often needs manual transfer
  • Modest review base at 40 on Capterra, and the interface is basic
  • Built for small fleets; it does not scale to large or brokerage-heavy operations

TruckingOffice is the budget owner-operator pick, priced from $20/mo and focused on the paperwork a small trucking business actually files. It holds 4.5/5 on Capterra across 40 reviews with 85% positive sentiment.

The draw is IFTA and fuel-tax automation alongside dispatch, load management, driver settlements, and expense tracking, with a Basic plan at $20/mo, Pro at $30/mo, and per-truck add-ons from $5 to $25.

The main knock is accounting: there is no direct QuickBooks sync, so financial data often moves by hand, and the interface is basic. The review base is modest.

Best for owner-operators and very small fleets that want cheap dispatch plus IFTA. Wrong for growing carriers that need QuickBooks and a modern interface.

Best all-in-one for carriers that want dispatch, accounting, and payroll unified in real time

What's great

  • Real-time, fully integrated dispatch, accounting, payroll, and IFTA in one system, a genuine admin time-saver
  • Established vendor operating since 1982, with responsive, well-trained support cited repeatedly by reviewers
  • Strong fit for carriers that want dispatch and the entire back office without a separate accounting package

Watch-outs

  • Thin third-party track record, only 7 Capterra reviews at 4.3/5, so validation is limited
  • Closed system that does not integrate with outside software, and reviewers call it legacy-feeling
  • Quote-only pricing that reviewers describe as on the high side

Axon is the all-in-one pick for a carrier that wants dispatch and a real back office, accounting, payroll, and IFTA, moving in real time on one system. Its differentiator is that a change in dispatch flows straight through to billing and payroll without re-keying.

On third-party reviews it is thin, 4.3/5 on Capterra across just 7 reviews , but the vendor has operated since 1982 and reviewers consistently praise the support and the time saved by the integration.

The trade-offs are real: it is a closed system that does not connect to outside tools, the interface feels legacy, and pricing is quote-only and described as high.

Best for established carriers that want dispatch, accounting, and payroll genuinely unified and will not miss third-party integrations. Wrong for teams that want a modern, open, API-first platform.

Tools we considered but excluded

We evaluated more tools than the 10 you see above. These did not make the cut. Saying what we rejected, and why, is the editorial muscle most listicles skip.

  • ProTransport (PCS): Capable carrier TMS now part of PCS Software, but a thin Capterra base (5.0/5 from just 10 reviews) makes it hard to score reliably against the tools above
  • Prophesy: Long-tenured dispatch and routing software, now a Korber product, with a moderate review base but an aging, desktop-era interface; kept as an honorable mention
  • Samsara: Excellent fleet telematics and ELD platform with strong dispatch tools, but a fleet-operations suite first; Motive represents the telematics-plus-dispatch category here
  • Trimble TMS: Powerful enterprise transportation suite, but built for large carriers and 3PLs rather than owner-operator and small-carrier dispatch, and Capterra sentiment is mixed
  • DAT and load boards: Load boards and freight-matching marketplaces, not dispatch systems of record; they feed a TMS rather than replace one

Honorable mentions

Solid tools that did not crack the main list but are worth tracking, especially for niche use cases.

  • Samsara: If telematics, cameras, and compliance are the priority and dispatch is secondary, its fleet platform is a strong alternative to Motive
  • ProTransport (PCS): Worth a demo for carriers wanting a fuller TMS with dispatch, maintenance, and accounting under the PCS Software umbrella
  • Prophesy: Established dispatch and routing for traditional carriers comfortable with a desktop-style interface and deep mileage and routing tools

The freight dispatch software buyer spectrum

Dispatch software is not one market. It is four overlapping ones, and buying from the wrong group wastes more in setup and change management than the subscription ever will.

Owner-operator and small-carrier tools. Truckstop ITS Dispatch, AscendTMS, TruckingOffice, and Tailwind are built for one to a few dozen trucks: load entry, dispatch, invoicing, settlements, and IFTA at a low, predictable price. For a solo driver or a small fleet replacing spreadsheets and phone calls, this is the group to shortlist first.

Modern, API-first carrier and broker platforms. Rose Rocket, Alvys, and Truckbase are the cloud-native newcomers, with cleaner interfaces, automation, open APIs, and AI document handling. They cost more and reward operations that will actually use the automation and integrations.

Auto transport and specialist dispatch. Super Dispatch is the clearest example, purpose-built for car hauling with VIN scanning, digital inspections, and the Central Dispatch marketplace. Specialist dispatch tools beat general-freight tools inside their niche and are wrong outside it.

Fleet and telematics platforms with dispatch. Motive, and Samsara alongside it, lead with ELD and HOS compliance, GPS tracking, and cameras, then add dispatch as a module. If compliance and tracking are the priority and dispatch is secondary, start here rather than with a back-office TMS.

The pricing reality in dispatch software

Dispatch pricing is more transparent than freight-forwarding software, but the model varies enough that a headline number rarely tells the whole story.

Flat-rate and per-truck plans dominate the low end. TruckingOffice starts at $20/mo, ITS Dispatch at $50/mo for an owner-operator, and Super Dispatch Carrier Pro from about $55 per seat. For one to a few trucks, these are the cheapest ways into real dispatch software.

Per-user pricing scales with your team. Tailwind publishes $99, $149, and $199 per user per month, and AscendTMS Premium is $99 per user. Seat count is the main cost driver, so a growing dispatch team should model the fully loaded number, not the entry seat.

Flat unlimited-user pricing changes the math. Alvys starts around $514/mo with unlimited users, and Rose Rocket bills on usage from roughly $2,080/mo. These look expensive for one truck and get cheaper per seat as you add dispatchers, which is the point.

Telematics pricing hides in hardware. Motive and Samsara quote per vehicle and tie cost to ELDs, cameras, and multi-year terms. The dispatch module is bundled, so compare total fleet cost, not a dispatch line item.

What to test in a dispatch software trial

Do not test the vendor demo. Test your own loads, your own drivers, and your own settlement run.

One, dispatch a real load end to end. Take an actual load from entry to driver assignment to status updates to POD to invoice. Count the clicks and the re-keying. This single exercise exposes most of the workflow friction you will live with daily.

Two, put it in a driver’s hands. If the tool has a driver app, have a real driver accept a load, update status, and upload a POD or BOL photo from the road. Driver adoption, not dispatcher preference, decides whether the system sticks.

Three, run a settlement and an invoice. Generate a driver or owner-operator settlement and a customer invoice, then check whether it posts to built-in accounting or exports to QuickBooks, and how clean that hand-off is.

Four, file a test IFTA and check fuel tax. For carriers, confirm the system pulls miles by jurisdiction and produces an IFTA-ready report. Ask exactly what is automated and what you still enter by hand.

Five, connect your load board and ELD. Verify the named integration to Truckstop or DAT and to your ELD or telematics provider actually works with your accounts, not just in a slide. Broken integrations are the most common post-purchase regret.

Six, time the support response. Log a real question during a US business day and see how fast a human answers. Tailwind’s post-acquisition support complaints are a reminder that responsiveness can change under new ownership.

What’s changing in dispatch software in 2026

AI is landing on documents and load entry first. Truckbase, Rose Rocket, and others now use AI to read rate confirmations, extract load details, and cut manual entry. In 2026 this automates clerical work rather than making routing decisions, and the payback is real but incremental.

Cloud-native tools are pulling share from desktop incumbents. Alvys, Rose Rocket, and Truckbase are winning carriers who find legacy, desktop-era systems like the traditional Prophesy and Axon interfaces dated, even where the older tools are functionally deep.

Security is becoming a selling point. Rose Rocket’s SOC 2 Type II attestation is still unusual among trucking TMS vendors, but as brokers and shippers push data-security questions down to their carriers, independent audits are starting to matter in the buy decision.

Dispatch, ELD, and payments keep converging. Motive bundles dispatch with compliance and a fuel card, and Super Dispatch ties dispatch to SuperPay. More vendors now want to own the money movement and the compliance data, not just the load board.

The stack is splitting into a system of record plus a load board. More carriers now run one dispatch TMS and pull freight from Truckstop or DAT rather than expecting one vendor to be both the marketplace and the back office.

Choosing the right dispatch system

Answer these before you book demos and the ten tools narrow to two or three.

1. Authority type and role

Owner-operators and small carriers should look at ITS Dispatch, TruckingOffice, AscendTMS, and Truckbase. Brokers and dual-authority operations should weight AscendTMS, ITS Dispatch, Tailwind, Rose Rocket, and Alvys. Auto transport belongs with Super Dispatch.

2. Fleet size and growth

Under about five trucks and cost-sensitive: TruckingOffice, ITS Dispatch, or free AscendTMS. Growing toward a real dispatch team: Alvys or Rose Rocket for unlimited-user or usage-based scaling, or Tailwind on published per-user tiers.

3. Back-office and accounting setup

If you want dispatch and a real ledger in one system, look at Axon for built-in accounting and payroll, or TruckingOffice for built-in books. If you keep accounting in QuickBooks, prioritize a clean sync: ITS Dispatch, Tailwind, Truckbase, or Rose Rocket.

4. Compliance and tracking needs

If ELD, HOS, GPS, and cameras are central, start with Motive or Samsara and treat dispatch as a bonus module. If a partner ELD is enough, a lighter dispatch tool plus a named ELD integration keeps cost down.

5. Existing systems you must keep

List the tools you will not replace, your load board, ELD, factoring company, or accounting package, then score each platform on named, documented integrations rather than roadmap promises.

Final pick by operation profile

  • Owner-operator on a budget: TruckingOffice at $20/mo, or free AscendTMS, for dispatch plus IFTA without a real monthly bill.
  • Small carrier wanting proven, cheap dispatch: Truckstop ITS Dispatch, for the load-board tie-in and the deepest track record from $50/mo.
  • Broker or dual-authority shop: AscendTMS to start free, or Tailwind for published per-user pricing with accounting built in.
  • Growing carrier or brokerage that wants modern software: Rose Rocket for automation, portals, and SOC 2, or Alvys for flat, unlimited-user pricing.
  • Heavy-haul or open-deck carrier: Truckbase, for the top modern rating and AI document handling built for complex moves.
  • Auto transport carrier or broker: Super Dispatch, for purpose-built car-hauling dispatch and the Central Dispatch marketplace.
  • Fleet that lives on ELD and tracking: Motive, to unify compliance, GPS, cameras, and dispatch on one platform.
  • Carrier that wants dispatch and the whole back office unified: Axon, after confirming you will not miss third-party integrations.

How we research dispatch platforms

CEOPickz does not accept paid placements in rankings. Tool order reflects a weighted view of G2 and Capterra review volume and satisfaction, dispatch and load-management depth, load-board and ELD integration, accounting and IFTA capability, pricing accessibility, and fit for US carriers, owner-operators, and brokers.

G2 and Capterra ratings and review counts were read from live product pages in September 2026. Pricing was taken from vendor pricing pages and established third-party pricing databases on the same date, with ranges noted where vendors publish no numbers.

This comparison does not include tools we have not researched. The excluded and honorable mention sections record the tools we evaluated and the specific reason each did not make the primary list. Vendor blogs and vendor-run comparison pages were not treated as neutral sources.
