Comparing the best Freight Forwarding Tracking & Visibility Software of 2026 includes 1. CargoEZ 2. project44 3. FourKites 4. GoComet 5. Descartes MacroPoint 6. Terminal49 7. Vizion API 8. Tive 9. Magaya Supply Chain 10. GoFreight.
TL;DR
- CargoEZ: best for forwarders that want tracking inside the operations system, not bolted on. Multi-modal shipment visibility, a customer portal, and eAWB all live with quoting, booking, and accounting in one cloud platform. G2 4.8/5 across 40 reviews.
- project44: best for enterprise multimodal coverage. Movement platform rated 4.7/5 on G2 across 744 reviews, with the widest ocean, air, rail, and over-the-road carrier network and predictive ETAs.
- FourKites: best for ocean plus over-the-road on one map. 4.5/5 on G2 across 269 reviews, strong appointment and yard features for forwarders with a domestic drayage leg.
- GoComet: best value for container visibility plus freight audit. 4.9/5 on G2 across 242 reviews, quick to deploy, with detention and demurrage alerting and invoice reconciliation in the same tool.
- Terminal49: best for a clean container tracking API and dashboard. 4.9/5 on G2, built for forwarders that want ocean milestones piped into their own portal without a heavy platform.
Ten platforms that give US freight forwarders and NVOCCs a live view of ocean containers and air shipments, ranked on carrier data coverage, predictive ETA accuracy, detention and demurrage alerting, and how the tracking feeds a customer portal. Most of these sit next to your forwarding system rather than replacing it, so the real question is which one you bolt on. The pricing behind the custom quotes, where the ETA data actually comes from, and the pick for your lane mix and volume.
What is freight tracking and visibility software?
Freight tracking and visibility software gives a forwarder or NVOCC a live, single-screen view of where every ocean container and air shipment is, using carrier EDI and API feeds, terminal and port data, AIS vessel positions, rail milestones, and GPS or ELD data for the road legs.
The better platforms add predictive ETAs, detention and demurrage countdown alerts, exception flagging, and a branded portal so shippers can self-serve status instead of emailing operations. Most run alongside a forwarding system such as CargoEZ, Magaya, or GoFreight rather than replacing it.

How we chose these tools
This comparison is scoped to real-time tracking and visibility for US freight forwarders and NVOCCs, so pure shipper-side control towers, parcel trackers, and last-mile delivery apps are out of scope. It draws on documented carrier-integration coverage, recurring themes across G2 and Capterra review samples, vendor pricing pages and third-party pricing databases checked in August 2026, and published product documentation. G2 and Capterra ratings and review counts were read from live product pages in August 2026. Vendor blogs and vendor comparison pages were not used as neutral evidence.

Detailed reviews
CargoEZ
Tracking and a customer portal built into the forwarding platform, not a separate subscriptionWhat's great
- Air, ocean, and land shipment tracking sits inside the same system as quoting, booking, documents, and accounting, so status is tied to the live file rather than a parallel dashboard
- A branded customer portal ships with the platform, letting shippers track shipments and pull documents without a separate visibility contract
- eAWB issuance, milestone updates, and exception flags update the file directly, which cuts the manual status re-keying that a bolt-on tracker still leaves in place
Watch-outs
- Carrier and terminal data coverage is narrower than a dedicated network like project44 or FourKites, especially for over-the-road GPS and rail
- Predictive ETA modeling is lighter than the pure visibility specialists
- Pricing is quote-only with no public tiers, so you cannot benchmark cost without a sales call
CargoEZ, from AVOW Solutions, earns the top spot here because for most US forwarders the right answer to a visibility project is not to buy a second platform. Tracking, the customer portal, and eAWB live with operations and accounting in one cloud system, so a container milestone updates the actual shipment file instead of a standalone map. It carries 40 G2 reviews at 4.8/5, with recurring praise for fast onboarding and responsive support.
The practical draw for an NVOCC is that the portal your customers use for tracking is the same one that shows their documents and invoices, and there is no integration to maintain between a tracker and the system of record.
Where it gives ground is raw data breadth. project44 and FourKites connect more carriers, terminals, and telematics feeds, and their ETA models are more mature. If your lanes are concentrated and your pain is operational rather than analytical, that gap rarely bites.
Best for small to mid-size US forwarders and NVOCCs that want tracking and a portal without a second vendor. Wrong for large 3PLs that need the widest possible multimodal carrier network on day one.

project44
The widest multimodal carrier network for forwarders that live on ocean, air, rail, and roadWhat's great
- Largest carrier and telematics network in the category, covering ocean, air, rail, parcel, and over-the-road on one data model
- Predictive ETAs and dwell and detention analytics that reviewers rate well above the operations-suite trackers
- Deep, documented API and prebuilt connectors into major TMS and ERP systems, so forwarders can push milestones into an existing portal
Watch-outs
- Priced for enterprise volume, so a small forwarder will find the annual commitment hard to justify
- Implementation and carrier onboarding can run months for complex lane networks
- It is a visibility layer only, with no operations file, documents, or accounting
project44 is the platform large forwarders and 3PLs standardize on when a shipment touches four modes before it delivers. On G2 it holds 4.7/5 across 744 reviews , and its Movement platform was named a G2 Leader in the Enterprise TMS grid in August 2026.
The strength is coverage and prediction. It connects more ocean carriers, terminals, airlines, railroads, and ELD providers than anything else here, and the ETA and dwell analytics are genuinely used for detention and demurrage avoidance rather than just display.
The cost of that is enterprise pricing and a real onboarding effort, and it does nothing outside visibility. Forwarders run it beside CargoWise, Magaya, or a homegrown ops system and pipe milestones back through the API.
Best for large forwarders and 3PLs with high volume and a genuinely multimodal lane network. Wrong for a small US forwarder whose freight is mostly one trade lane and one mode.

FourKites
Ocean containers and the domestic drayage leg on one map, with yard and appointment toolsWhat's great
- Strong combination of ocean container tracking and North American over-the-road visibility, useful for forwarders that arrange their own drayage and transload
- Yard, dock, and appointment scheduling features that go beyond a pure track-and-trace view
- Large carrier network and a mature exception and ETA engine, rated 4.5/5 on G2 across 269 reviews
Watch-outs
- Enterprise pricing and contract structure, similar to project44
- Reviewers note the interface has a learning curve and configuration can be heavy
- Air cargo coverage is less of a focus than ocean and road
FourKites competes head to head with project44 and wins for the forwarder whose file does not end at the port. It ties ocean container milestones to the North American truck leg, and adds yard and appointment scheduling that a plain tracker skips. G2 rates it 4.5/5 across 269 reviews , with Gartner Peer Insights echoing the ocean-plus-road strength.
For a US NVOCC that controls drayage and transload, seeing the container and the truck on one screen with real dwell alerts is worth the platform.
The trade-offs are the familiar enterprise ones: a heavier configuration, an annual commitment, and a UI that new operations staff take time to learn. Air is covered but is not the headline.
Best for forwarders with a domestic drayage or transload operation attached to ocean imports. Wrong for small shops or air-forwarding specialists on a tight budget.

GoComet
Container visibility plus detention, demurrage, and freight invoice audit in one deploymentWhat's great
- Multimodal container and shipment tracking with geofencing and live vessel positions, plus detention and demurrage countdown alerts that reviewers say cut avoidable fees
- Freight invoice audit and reconciliation in the same platform, catching carrier overbilling against contracted rates
- Fast to deploy with a 4.9/5 G2 rating across 242 reviews and strong Gartner Peer Insights marks, at a cost well below the enterprise networks
Watch-outs
- Reviewers report data-refresh lag from some smaller ocean carriers and slower air tracking updates
- It complements rather than replaces a forwarding operations and accounting system
- Deep integrations into legacy ERP systems carry a learning curve
GoComet is the value pick for a forwarder that wants real container visibility and spend control without an enterprise contract. It holds 4.9/5 on G2 across 242 reviews and 4.9/5 on Capterra , with reviewers citing quick adoption and responsive support.
The combination that stands out is tracking plus money. Live vessel positions and geofenced milestones sit next to detention and demurrage alerts and a freight invoice audit module, so the same tool that tells you a box is late also tells you the carrier overbilled you for it.
The limits are the usual layer-tool ones: no shipment file, no ledger, and some lag on data from smaller carriers and on air.
Best for mid-size forwarders and shippers focused on container visibility and freight spend. Wrong as a single system of record for the shipment.

Descartes MacroPoint
The default over-the-road visibility layer, with ocean added, inside the Descartes networkWhat's great
- Deepest review base in this comparison at 868 G2 reviews, 4.7/5, with a long track record in North American over-the-road tracking
- Ocean container tracking added to the same platform, plus carrier and driver location capture through multiple methods including ELD, app, and phone
- Part of the wider Descartes Global Logistics Network, so customs, routing, and carrier connectivity can be added later
Watch-outs
- Road-freight heritage means ocean and air depth is younger than project44 or FourKites
- Some reviewers report intermittent access issues and dated screens
- Enterprise sales and pricing process, with per-tracked-load economics that need modeling
Descartes MacroPoint is the incumbent for over-the-road visibility in North America, and it carries 4.7/5 on G2 across 895 reviews , the largest sample here. It has since added ocean container tracking to the same platform, and it was named the top overall leader in supply chain visibility in the G2 Winter 2025 reports .
For a US forwarder whose freight is heavily domestic truckload and drayage with ocean imports feeding it, MacroPoint covers the road leg better than the ocean-first tools and covers ocean adequately.
The caveats are that the ocean and air side is newer, some reviewers flag access hiccups and an aging interface, and pricing is an enterprise conversation often structured per tracked load.
Best for road-led forwarders and brokers that need strong over-the-road tracking with ocean bolted on. Wrong for air-forwarding specialists or forwarders that want the deepest ocean prediction.

Terminal49
For forwarders that want clean ocean milestones piped into their own portal via APIWhat's great
- Purpose-built for ocean and rail container tracking, with normalized milestone data from shipping lines and North American terminals through one API and dashboard
- Detention and demurrage last-free-day tracking and alerting, aimed squarely at import forwarders
- A free tracking tier and published usage-based pricing, so a small forwarder can start without a sales cycle
Watch-outs
- Only 12 G2 reviews, so third-party validation is thin despite a 4.9/5 average
- Ocean and rail only, with no air cargo and no over-the-road tracking
- It is data and dashboard, not a portal or operations system, so you build the customer-facing layer yourself
Terminal49 is the pick for a forwarder that already has a portal or ops system and just needs reliable, normalized ocean container data flowing into it. It covers ocean and North American rail milestones from carriers and terminals through a single API, and it tracks last free day for detention and demurrage. G2 shows 4.9/5, though across only 12 reviews .
The appeal is scope and pricing honesty. It does one job, publishes usage-based pricing , and offers a free tracking tier, so a small import forwarder can wire it in without an enterprise contract.
The limits are deliberate: no air, no road, no portal, and a small review base. You supply the front end.
Best for import-focused forwarders and NVOCCs that want ocean container data in their own system. Wrong for anyone needing multimodal coverage or a ready-made customer portal.

Vizion API
For forwarders and tech teams building container tracking into a product or portalWhat's great
- Standardized, event-level container tracking data from ocean carriers, terminals, rail, and customs sources through one API, with change events pushed in near real time
- Strong developer documentation and schema consistency, which matters when you are feeding a customer portal or a BI layer
- Positions itself as covering a majority of global container trade, useful for forwarders with broad lane exposure
Watch-outs
- No G2 presence and a thin public review base, so peer validation is limited
- Ocean and rail focused, with no air cargo and no road tracking
- It is raw data only, so you own the dashboard, the alerts, and the portal work
Vizion API is the option for a forwarder with in-house development capacity that wants to own its tracking experience rather than rent someone’s dashboard. It delivers normalized, event-level container data from carriers, terminals, rail, and customs feeds through a single well-documented API, per its product documentation .
Because it has no G2 profile and only a small footprint on Capterra and SoftwareAdvice, this ranking rests on documented coverage rather than a large review sample, which is why it sits mid-table despite a clean product.
The scope is deliberately narrow: ocean and rail, data not dashboards, and you build the alerting and the portal.
Best for forwarders and logistics tech teams building a branded tracking product. Wrong for an operations team that wants a finished screen and alerts out of the box.

Tive
For high-value or temperature-sensitive shipments that need condition data, not just locationWhat's great
- Real-time location plus condition data, temperature, humidity, shock, and light, from a single cellular tracker with long battery life
- Useful for forwarders moving pharma, perishables, electronics, or other cargo where a temperature excursion is the real risk
- 4.5/5 on G2 across 148 reviews, with praise for the shipment-level detail and a responsive team
Watch-outs
- Tracker hardware cost per shipment adds up, so it fits selective high-value lanes rather than every box
- Not a network-wide carrier-data visibility tool, so you still need something for shipments without a device
- Reviewers note occasional minor temperature variance and device recovery logistics
Tive solves a different problem from the carrier-data platforms. Instead of asking the ocean line where the box is, it puts a cellular sensor in the shipment and reports location plus temperature, shock, humidity, and light in real time. G2 rates it 4.5/5 across 148 reviews , and its Capterra profile echoes the condition-monitoring strength.
For a forwarder handling pharma, food, or fragile high-value cargo, the value is knowing a reefer drifted out of range mid-ocean while you can still act, not after the claim.
The cost model is the constraint: you pay per tracker, so this is a tool for selected lanes, run alongside a carrier-data platform for everything else.
Best for forwarders with temperature-sensitive or high-value freight that needs condition proof. Wrong as a fleet-wide, every-shipment visibility layer.

Magaya Supply Chain
LiveTrack visibility bundled with a full forwarding and warehouse systemWhat's great
- LiveTrack tracking and a customer portal come with a full forwarding and warehouse platform, so visibility is tied to the shipment file
- Largest US SMB install base in this set, with 290 G2 reviews at 4.4/5 and strong marks for document generation
- Named a Leader in nine G2 Winter 2026 grid reports across supply chain and logistics categories
Watch-outs
- Carrier-data breadth and predictive ETAs trail the dedicated visibility networks
- Parts of the interface still feel dated to reviewers, and accounting-integration friction recurs on Capterra
- Modular pricing climbs as you switch on WMS, customs, and CRM
Magaya belongs on this list because for its user base the visibility question is already answered inside the platform they run operations on. LiveTrack and the customer portal ship with the forwarding and warehouse system, and the 290 G2 reviews at 4.4/5 are the deepest operations-suite track record here. The vendor was named a Leader in nine G2 Winter 2026 grids .
For a warehouse-heavy US SMB forwarder, tracking that updates the same file that holds the house bill and the inventory record beats a slicker standalone map.
The softer spots are real: less carrier data than project44, lighter ETA modeling, and an interface that shows its age in places.
Best for US SMB forwarders with warehouse operations who want tracking inside their system of record. Wrong for forwarders that need best-in-class multimodal carrier coverage.

GoFreight
Cloud-native forwarding software with tracking and a portal for US mid-market forwardersWhat's great
- Shipment tracking and a customer portal are part of a modern cloud-native forwarding platform, rated 4.8/5 on G2 across 92 reviews, the highest operations-suite score here
- US-built for forwarders and NVOCCs, with AMS and ISF filing and shipment-based accounting in the same tool
- Onboarding is usually 4 to 8 weeks with mid-market pricing published as per-user tiers
Watch-outs
- Carrier-data coverage and predictive ETAs are lighter than the visibility specialists
- Exact tier pricing still needs a sales call, and deep customs content trails Descartes
- A younger platform, so very large multi-entity global forwarders can outgrow it
GoFreight makes the list as the cloud-native operations suite whose built-in tracking and portal are good enough that many US mid-market forwarders will not buy a separate visibility tool. Its 88 G2 reviews average 4.8/5, the highest among the operations suites here, and SelectHub’s profile notes the modern interface and short implementation.
Status updates land on the shipment file and flow to a customer portal, and pricing is more transparent than most at a reported $100 to $400 per user per month.
Where it gives ground is carrier-data depth and ETA prediction, which is project44 and FourKites territory. For steady single-lane volume, that gap is small.
Best for US mid-market forwarders that want tracking inside a modern ops suite. Wrong for teams that need best-in-class multimodal prediction or on-premise control.

Tools we considered but excluded
We evaluated more tools than the 10 you see above. These did not make the cut. Saying what we rejected, and why, is the editorial muscle most listicles skip.
- Shippeo: Strong real-time transportation visibility platform at 4.7/5 on G2, but its network and customer base are European road-freight led (Renault, Carrefour, Geodis); thinner fit for US ocean and air forwarders
- Wakeo: Multimodal visibility platform with a mostly European deployment base and limited US forwarder references
- CargoWise: Its SmartHub visibility is part of a full enterprise forwarding suite reviewed on our freight management page, not a standalone tracking tool
- Gnosis Freight: Container Lifecycle Management platform with a growing following, but too few third-party reviews to score reliably against the field
- MarineTraffic / Sinay: Vessel AIS data providers rather than shipment-level forwarder visibility platforms
Honorable mentions
Solid tools that did not crack the main list but are worth tracking, especially for niche use cases.
- Gnosis Freight: Container Lifecycle Management framing resonates with import forwarders; worth a demo as the review base grows
- Shipsgo: Low-cost container tracking with a usable API and dashboard for small forwarders testing the category
- project44 Movement: If you want visibility plus workflow and analytics in one enterprise platform, the wider Movement suite is worth scoping
The ten platforms at a glance
The fastest way to read this market is by what each tool is: a forwarding system with tracking inside it, an enterprise carrier-data network, a container-data API, or a sensor company. Buying across those lines is where forwarders waste an implementation.
| Rank | Platform | Type | Best for | Rating |

| 3 | FourKites | Enterprise carrier-data network | Ocean imports plus North American drayage | G2 4.5 (269) |
| 4 | GoComet | Visibility plus freight audit | Mid-size forwarders wanting D&D control on a budget | G2 4.9 (242) |
| 5 | Descartes MacroPoint | Over-the-road led, ocean added | Road-heavy forwarders and brokers | G2 4.7 (868) |
| 6 | Terminal49 | Container tracking API and dashboard | Import forwarders feeding their own portal | G2 4.9 (12) |
| 7 | Vizion API | Pure container data feed | Tech teams building a branded tracker | No G2 profile |
| 8 | Tive | Sensor-based condition monitoring | Pharma, perishables, high-value cargo | G2 4.5 (148) |
| 9 | Magaya Supply Chain | Ops suite with LiveTrack | Warehouse-heavy US SMB forwarders | G2 4.4 (290) |
| 10 | GoFreight | Cloud-native ops suite | US mid-market forwarders | G2 4.8 (88) |
Ratings were read from live G2 pages in August 2026. Four of these ten are visibility layers with no shipment file of their own, three are operations suites, one is a dashboard-plus-API, one is a raw data feed, and one is a hardware sensor platform.
Where the tracking data actually comes from
A visibility platform is only as good as its feeds, and forwarders are often surprised how many separate sources sit behind one ETA.
Ocean. Carrier EDI and API connections give booking, gate-in, load, discharge, and gate-out events. Terminal and port systems fill gaps the carrier misses. AIS vessel positions place the ship on the map between milestones. project44, FourKites, GoComet, Terminal49, and Vizion all pull this stack; the difference is how many carriers and terminals each has under contract and how fast changes propagate.
Air. Status comes from airline messaging and ground handler updates keyed to the air waybill. Coverage is thinner and more uneven than ocean. project44 and CargoEZ handle air; several tools here do not.
Road and rail. GPS from carrier telematics, ELD providers, or a driver app covers the truck leg. Rail milestones come from the railroads. Descartes MacroPoint and FourKites are strongest here.
Prediction. On top of the raw events, the platform layers a model trained on historical transit times to produce a predictive ETA and to flag a shipment as at risk. This is where project44 and FourKites separate from the operations suites, whose ETAs lean more on scheduled dates.
Visibility layer versus system of record
Seven of these ten tools do not hold your shipment file. That is the single most important thing to get straight before you shortlist.
If you run CargoEZ, Magaya, GoFreight, or CargoWise, you already have tracking and a portal. The reason to add project44, FourKites, GoComet, or Descartes MacroPoint is a specific gap: not enough carriers connected, ETAs you cannot trust for detention and demurrage decisions, or no over-the-road coverage for your drayage. Buy the layer to close that gap, then integrate it back so the milestones land on the file your operations team actually works in.
If you are still on spreadsheets and carrier websites, do not start with a visibility layer. Start with an operations suite that includes tracking, and only add a specialist later if volume and lane complexity justify it.
Terminal49 and Vizion are a third case. They are for forwarders that want to own the customer-facing tracking experience and have the development capacity to build it on top of a clean data feed.
What to check before you sign
Test the data, the alerts, and the integration with your own containers and lanes, not the vendor’s demo shipments.
One, run your real lanes for two weeks. Give the vendor a live list of 20 to 50 of your actual bookings across your top trade lanes. Measure milestone completeness and how far the predictive ETA drifts from actual arrival. A tool that is accurate on transpacific but blind on your intra-Asia feeder legs is not accurate for you.
Two, check carrier and terminal coverage against your book. Ask for the named list of ocean carriers, airlines, and US terminals with live integrations, and cross it against the carriers you actually book. Gaps get filled by slower screen-scraping or not at all.
Three, trigger a detention and demurrage scenario. Confirm the platform tracks last free day, counts down, and alerts operations before the clock runs out, not after. For GoComet, also test whether the invoice audit catches a deliberately inflated demurrage charge.
Four, test the integration path. Push milestones into your forwarding system or portal through the API. Time how long a real connector takes to build and whether events arrive in minutes or hours.
Five, put a customer in the portal. If the tool has a shipper-facing view, invite a real client to track a shipment and pull documents. If it is API-only, price the front-end build honestly.
Six, log a support ticket during US business hours. Time the response. For vendors headquartered outside the US, this is the check that predicts your worst days.
Final pick by forwarder profile
- Small US import forwarder, ocean only: Terminal49 for clean container data into your own system, or GoComet if you want tracking plus detention and demurrage alerting without a big contract.
- US mid-market forwarder on a modern ops suite: stay with the tracking in CargoEZ or GoFreight; add GoComet only if D&D fees are a live problem.
- Warehouse-heavy SMB forwarder: Magaya LiveTrack inside the system you already run operations on.
- Large 3PL with multimodal lanes: project44 for the widest carrier network and the strongest predictive ETAs.
- Forwarder controlling ocean imports plus domestic drayage: FourKites, for containers and the truck leg on one screen with yard and appointment tools.
- Road-led forwarder or broker with some ocean: Descartes MacroPoint, the over-the-road incumbent with ocean added.
- Pharma, perishables, or high-value cargo: Tive on selected lanes for condition data, run alongside a carrier-data platform for everything else.
- Logistics tech team building a branded tracker: Vizion API for the raw feed, Terminal49 if you want a dashboard included.
