How we chose these tools

This comparison draws on documented product capabilities, recurring themes across G2 and Capterra review samples, vendor pricing pages verified in August 2026, and published product documentation. G2 ratings and review counts were read from live G2 pages in August 2026. Pricing was verified from each vendor pricing page or third-party pricing databases on the same date. The assessment covers solo practitioners, independent salons, multi-location operations, and enterprise spa chains operating primarily in the US market. Pure fitness-only or gym-only platforms are out of scope.

Best overall for salons and spas needing an all-in-one platform at competitive pricing

What's great

  • Broadest feature set in the comparison at the lowest per-calendar price, covering booking, POS, payroll, marketing, website builder, and inventory in one subscription
  • Built-in payroll processing eliminates the need for a separate Gusto or ADP subscription, saving $40-$80/mo for most small salons
  • Consumer marketplace app with millions of downloads drives new client discovery without additional ad spend

Watch-outs

  • Per-calendar pricing adds up for larger teams; a 10-stylist salon pays $120/mo vs Rosy's $53/mo for the same headcount
  • Interface can feel overwhelming for first-time salon software users due to the sheer density of features across 20+ modules
  • Customer support quality is inconsistent in G2 reviews; some users report long hold times during peak hours
Vagaro is the all-in-one pick for salons that want booking, POS, payroll, marketing, and inventory under one login without stitching together three separate tools. At $30/mo for the first calendar and $10/mo for each additional, it undercuts Boulevard ($175/mo) and Mangomint ($165/mo) significantly while covering more ground than either. The built-in payroll is the differentiator most buyers overlook during evaluation. That alone saves $40-$80/mo compared to running Gusto alongside a booking-only platform. 250 G2 reviews at 4.4/5 reflect a user base spanning solo estheticians to 20-chair salons. The consumer marketplace app brings walk-in discovery that pure B2B platforms like Mangomint cannot match. The trade-off is UX density. Vagaro packs more features into more menus than most salon owners will ever use. Best for 1-15 provider salons and spas that want everything in one tool without enterprise pricing.

Best for high-end salons and spas that prioritize premium client experience

What's great

  • Precision scheduling handles duo-booking and multi-provider overlap (color processing + cut with two stylists) better than any competitor in the comparison
  • Client profiles store detailed visit history, preferences, and formulas, creating the white-glove experience that high-end salon clients expect
  • Unlimited service providers on all plans means no per-stylist surcharge as you grow, unlike Vagaro or Booksy

Watch-outs

  • Starting at $175/mo makes it the most expensive entry point in this comparison; solo stylists and small shops cannot justify it
  • Smaller integration ecosystem than Square or Vagaro; Boulevard is still building out its third-party connector library
  • Newer entrant with ~100 G2 reviews; less community validation compared to Mindbody (400+) or Vagaro (250+)
Boulevard exists for salons where the client experience is the product. The precision scheduling engine handles overlapping services (color processing while another stylist does a blowout) with a sophistication that Vagaro and Square simply do not attempt. The client profile depth, storing product preferences, color formulas, stylist notes, and visit cadence, turns the front desk into a concierge. 100 G2 reviews at 4.3/5 from a user base that skews upmarket: think Drybar-type operations, luxury spas, and multi-service salons billing $150+ per visit. The unlimited-provider model on all tiers removes the scaling anxiety that per-calendar platforms create. The trade-off is entry cost. At $175/mo Essentials, Boulevard costs 6x what Vagaro charges for a solo practitioner. That math only works when your average ticket is high enough to absorb it. Best for 5-50 provider premium salons and spas. Wrong for budget-conscious independents or barbershops.

Best for salons that want zero monthly subscription cost

What's great

  • Genuinely free core platform with unlimited staff, appointments, and locations; no other tool in this category matches that pricing model
  • Global consumer marketplace with millions of active users drives organic client discovery at no upfront cost
  • Clean, modern interface consistently praised in G2 reviews for ease of use; minimal training required for new staff

Watch-outs

  • Transaction fees (2.19% + $0.20 per swipe) plus 20% commission on first visits from marketplace-sourced clients add up fast for high-volume salons
  • Advanced reporting and enterprise features are thin compared to Boulevard, Mangomint, or Zenoti
  • Customer support is chat-only with no phone option; some users report slow response times during peak hours
Fresha flipped the salon software pricing model. No monthly fee. No per-provider charge. No seat limits. The entire platform, booking, POS, client management, staff scheduling, inventory, is free to use with unlimited everything. The catch is transaction-based revenue: 2.19% + $0.20 per card swipe, plus a 20% commission on the first appointment from clients who discover you through the Fresha marketplace. For a salon processing $15K/mo in card payments, that’s roughly $350/mo in processing fees alone, before the new-client commission. 60 G2 reviews at 4.7/5 reflect genuine satisfaction from a user base that skews international (strong in UK, Australia, EU, and growing in the US). The marketplace discovery engine is real: salons in dense urban markets report 10-20 new clients per month from Fresha search alone. The missing pieces are advanced analytics and enterprise-grade features. For solo stylists and small salons under $10K/mo in revenue, Fresha’s free model beats every subscription-based alternative in this list on total cost.

Best salon software for UX and intelligent scheduling automation

What's great

  • Highest G2 satisfaction score in the comparison at 4.8/5; users consistently praise the clean, modern interface and minimal learning curve
  • Smart automation features (auto-confirm, intelligent waitlist, gap-filling scheduling) reduce front desk workload by eliminating repetitive manual tasks
  • 60-day free trial is the longest in the category, giving teams real time to evaluate with actual client data before committing

Watch-outs

  • Starting at $165/mo puts it in premium territory; solo stylists processing under $8K/mo will struggle to justify the cost
  • Smaller integration ecosystem than Vagaro or Square; Mangomint functions primarily as a self-contained platform
  • Newer entrant (founded 2020) with a smaller user community; fewer online tutorials and community resources compared to Mindbody or Vagaro
Mangomint is what happens when software designers who understand modern UX build a salon platform from scratch. The interface is noticeably cleaner than Vagaro, Mindbody, or Rosy. That’s not a cosmetic advantage. It translates directly into less front-desk training time and fewer booking errors per shift. The smart scheduling automation, auto-confirming appointments, filling gaps in the calendar, managing a waitlist without manual intervention, eliminates the kind of repetitive admin work that burns out front desk staff. 80 G2 reviews at 4.8/5 is the highest satisfaction rating in this comparison. The 60-day trial is a confidence signal: Mangomint bets that two months of real use sells the product better than a demo. Pricing starts at $165/mo for up to 10 providers, which is competitive with Boulevard ($175/mo) but includes a provider cap that Boulevard doesn’t impose. Best for mid-size salons (5-25 providers) that value operational efficiency and modern UX over marketplace-driven client acquisition.

Best for solo stylists and independent beauty professionals on a budget

What's great

  • Most affordable paid plan for solo stylists at $24/mo, with booking, payments, website builder, and client management included
  • Instagram-ready booking pages and custom branding make independents look polished and professional without hiring a web designer
  • AI-powered social content suggestions help beauty professionals who struggle with marketing stay visible online

Watch-outs

  • Per-user pricing and limited team features make it expensive to scale past 3-5 stylists; team plans require custom pricing
  • Inventory management is basic compared to Vagaro, Boulevard, or Mangomint; product-heavy salons will need a supplemental system
  • No built-in payroll, limited financial reporting, and fewer business management tools than full-suite competitors
GlossGenius is the booth-renter’s platform. At $24/mo Standard, it gives a solo stylist a booking page, payment processing (2.6% per transaction), a custom website, and client management. All of it designed to look beautiful on Instagram. That aesthetic matters in beauty. A booking page that looks like it belongs on a premium salon’s website costs $0 in web design fees and converts better than a generic Calendly link. 50 G2 reviews at 4.4/5 from a user base that is overwhelmingly independent stylists, nail techs, and estheticians. The Gold plan at $48/mo adds text marketing campaigns and priority support. The platform intentionally doesn’t try to be Vagaro or Boulevard. No payroll. No deep inventory. No multi-location management. It does the three things a solo beauty professional actually needs, booking, payments, and looking good online, better than any enterprise tool scaled down. Wrong for salons past 5 providers. Perfect for the independent stylist who just left a salon and needs to look legitimate in 24 hours.

Best for salons already in the Square commerce ecosystem

What's great

  • Free tier with unlimited appointments for solo practitioners is genuinely usable, not a feature-stripped demo
  • Strongest POS and payment ecosystem in the comparison; seamless connection to Square Payroll, Square Loyalty, Square Marketing, and Square Banking
  • Broadest integration library of any tool here; connects natively to QuickBooks, Wix, WordPress, JotForm, and hundreds more

Watch-outs

  • Salon-specific features (color formula tracking, chair-level resource management, commission splits) are absent; this is generic scheduling, not salon software
  • Per-location pricing ($69/mo Premium x 5 locations = $345/mo) makes multi-location salons overpay compared to flat-rate alternatives
  • Reports and dashboards are retail-generic, not salon-optimized; no stylist performance metrics, rebooking rates, or service-category breakdowns
Square Appointments is the path of least resistance for salons that already process payments on Square. The free individual plan with unlimited appointments is real, and the broader Square ecosystem (Payroll, Loyalty, Marketing, Banking, Invoices) means the salon’s entire financial stack runs on one vendor. That integration depth is unmatched. 60 G2 reviews at 4.4/5. The gap is salon-specific intelligence. Square doesn’t know what a color formula is. It can’t track rebooking rates by stylist. It doesn’t handle commission splits or product back-bar inventory the way Vagaro or Boulevard do. For a solo esthetician or massage therapist who wants booking + payments with zero monthly cost, Square Appointments is the obvious answer. For a 10-chair hair salon with commission-based stylists and color inventory, the generic retail DNA becomes a daily friction point.

Best for fitness-wellness hybrid businesses with class scheduling needs

What's great

  • Largest consumer marketplace in the wellness industry; the Mindbody app has 3.6M+ ratings and drives real client discovery for listed businesses
  • Most comprehensive class and membership management for hybrid operations (yoga studios with retail, spas with fitness components, wellness centers)
  • Enterprise-grade features including AI front desk assistant, branded mobile app on Ultimate+, and extensive reporting suite

Watch-outs

  • Lowest G2 rating in the comparison at 3.6/5 across 400 reviews; consistent complaints about pricing increases (some users report 30-70% jumps at renewal), contract lock-in, and support quality
  • $139/mo Starter plan offers limited features relative to Vagaro ($30/mo) or Fresha (free) at similar functional depth
  • Interface feels dated compared to Mangomint, Boulevard, or Fresha; users report a steep learning curve and cluttered navigation
Mindbody built its moat on the consumer marketplace, not the software. The Mindbody app with 3.6M+ consumer ratings is the largest discovery channel in wellness. Spas and salons that rely on walk-in discovery from app searches get real value from that marketplace exposure. The software itself is a different story. 400 G2 reviews at 3.6/5, the lowest score in this comparison by a significant margin. The recurring themes in negative reviews are aggressive pricing increases at renewal and a UX that hasn’t kept pace with modern competitors. Mindbody’s real strength is class-based businesses. Yoga studios, pilates, fitness-spa hybrids, wellness centers that run both appointment-based services and group classes. No other tool in this list handles that hybrid model as deeply. For a pure hair salon or nail studio, Mindbody is overbuilt and overpriced. For a wellness center running 30 classes a week alongside facial and massage appointments, the class scheduling and membership management justify the cost.

Best for multi-location salon and spa chains needing enterprise-grade operations

What's great

  • Purpose-built for multi-location chains and franchises; handles centralized reporting across 50+ locations, royalty structures, and franchise management that no other tool in this list attempts
  • Most comprehensive feature set overall including AI-powered marketing, employee management, payroll, advanced BI dashboards, and custom branded mobile app
  • Powers major wellness chains (Hand & Stone, Massage Envy, European Wax Center), proving enterprise scalability

Watch-outs

  • No published pricing; custom quotes and multi-week sales cycles make it inaccessible for independent salons
  • Implementation takes 4-8 weeks with dedicated onboarding teams; not a "sign up today, book tomorrow" platform
  • Overkill for single-location salons; the complexity of a 200-feature enterprise platform creates unnecessary overhead for a 5-chair shop
Zenoti is the enterprise play. It powers brands like Hand & Stone, Massage Envy, and European Wax Center, operations running 50-500+ locations where centralized reporting, franchise royalty tracking, and cross-location gift card redemption are operational requirements, not nice-to-haves. 200 G2 reviews at 4.3/5 from a user base that skews multi-location and enterprise. The AI-powered marketing, advanced BI dashboards, and custom branded app features don’t exist at this depth in any other tool on this list. The cost reflects the complexity. Custom quotes typically land at $200-$500+/mo per location, plus implementation fees. A 10-location spa chain can easily spend $4K-$6K/mo before add-ons. That math only works at the revenue scale where a 2% improvement in rebooking rate across 50 locations generates more than the software cost. Single-location salons should not be evaluating Zenoti. The sales team will happily demo it, but the implementation overhead alone exceeds what a small salon should invest.

Best for barbershops and salons that rely on social media for client acquisition

What's great

  • Consumer marketplace with 30M+ users globally drives real client acquisition, particularly strong for barbershops and men's grooming businesses
  • Social media integration is the best in the comparison; Instagram and Facebook booking buttons, post scheduling, and review management are built in
  • Marketing tools (promotions, deals, social features) are included on the base plan; competitors charge extra for equivalent capabilities

Watch-outs

  • Per-provider pricing at $29.99/mo means a 10-stylist salon pays $300/mo, 2.5x what Vagaro charges for the same team size
  • Inventory management and advanced reporting are weaker than Boulevard, Mangomint, or Zenoti
  • Feature set leans heavily toward barbershops and hair; spa and wellness features (class scheduling, complex membership tiers) are limited
Booksy owns the barbershop market the way Boulevard owns luxury salons. The 30M+ user consumer marketplace is the strongest client discovery channel in men’s grooming, and the social media integration (Instagram booking buttons, review management, social post scheduling) aligns perfectly with how barbers actually market their businesses. 80 G2 reviews at 4.4/5 from a user base that skews male-focused: barbershops, men’s grooming lounges, and street-level hair salons. The per-provider pricing at $29.99/mo is transparent but scales poorly. Three barbers pay $90/mo. Ten pay $300/mo. At that headcount, Vagaro’s $120/mo or Rosy’s $53/mo is materially cheaper for equivalent booking and POS functionality. Booksy’s value proposition is the marketplace traffic. If your barbershop gets 5-10 new clients per month from Booksy search alone, the per-provider cost pays for itself. If your clients come exclusively from walk-ins and referrals, the marketplace premium doesn’t justify the pricing gap.

Best value for small-to-mid salons that want salon-specific features at the lowest team price

What's great

  • Most affordable team pricing in the comparison; a 10-stylist salon pays $53/mo vs $120 at Vagaro or $300 at Booksy
  • Built specifically for salons with color formula tracking, commission and tip management, and chair-level scheduling that generic tools like Square miss entirely
  • Flat-tier pricing with no per-transaction fees on appointments; straightforward cost structure with no surprises at scale

Watch-outs

  • Dated interface that feels several years behind Mangomint, Boulevard, and GlossGenius in design and responsiveness
  • Small G2 review base (30 reviews) provides less community validation than Vagaro (250+) or Mindbody (400+)
  • Marketing tools are basic email campaigns and promotions; no AI features, no social media integration, no text marketing on the base plan
Rosy is the sleeper pick in this comparison. A 10-stylist salon pays $53/mo. That is less than half of Vagaro’s $120/mo and a fraction of Boulevard’s $175/mo for a single plan. The pricing model uses flat tiers rather than per-provider billing, so growing from 4 stylists to 10 costs the same $53/mo. Color formula tracking, commission management, and chair-level scheduling are built in. Those are the salon-specific features that Square Appointments and generic scheduling tools completely lack. 30 G2 reviews at 4.3/5 is a thin review base, which is the honest caveat. The interface looks dated. The marketing tools are basic email campaigns, nothing close to what Vagaro or Zenoti offer in AI-powered outreach. But for a salon owner who cares about cost-per-stylist above everything else and needs genuinely salon-specific features, Rosy delivers more salon intelligence per dollar than any other platform here.

The three markets hiding inside “salon software”

Salon and spa management software is not one category. It’s three categories that share a shelf on G2, and buying from the wrong one creates more problems than it solves.

Solo practitioners and booth renters. Independents who left a salon to go solo. They need a booking page that looks professional, a card reader, and maybe text reminders. GlossGenius at $24/mo or Square Appointments at $0/mo covers it. The mistake is buying Vagaro or Boulevard at this stage. A solo lash tech paying $175/mo for Boulevard’s precision scheduling is paying for features built for a 20-chair operation.

Small to mid-size salons (2-20 providers). This is where the real competition happens. Vagaro, Mangomint, Fresha, Booksy, and Rosy all target this band. The differentiators are pricing model (per-calendar vs flat-tier vs transaction-based), UX quality, and whether the platform’s marketplace drives new client discovery. Most salons in this band will evaluate three tools and land on the one their front desk manager finds easiest to use.

Multi-location chains and enterprises (20+ providers, 3+ locations). Zenoti and Boulevard compete here. Mindbody occupies the fitness-wellness hybrid niche. The requirements shift from “does it book appointments” to “does it handle centralized payroll, cross-location gift card redemption, franchise reporting, and AI-driven marketing across 50 locations.” Single-location salon software cannot stretch to cover this.

The pricing model trap

Three fundamentally different pricing models exist in this category. Misunderstanding them is the most expensive mistake salon owners make during evaluation.

Per-provider pricing. Vagaro ($30/mo + $10 per additional calendar), Booksy ($29.99/mo per provider), and GlossGenius ($24/mo per user). The math is simple for solo stylists. It punishes growing salons. A 10-provider salon on Booksy pays $300/mo. The same salon on Rosy pays $53/mo.

Flat-tier pricing. Rosy ($29-$109/mo by user band), Boulevard ($175-$410/mo with unlimited providers), and Mangomint ($165-$375/mo with provider caps). You know the cost before you hire. Boulevard and Mangomint cost more upfront but don’t penalize growth within their tier.

Transaction-based (free subscription). Fresha charges $0/mo but takes 2.19% + $0.20 per card swipe plus 20% on first appointments from marketplace clients. Square Appointments is free for individuals with 2.6% + $0.10 processing. The monthly cost is invisible until the card statement arrives. A salon processing $20K/mo in cards on Fresha pays roughly $460/mo in processing alone. That’s more than Boulevard’s Essentials plan.

Run the math on your actual monthly card volume and team size before demos. The platform that looks cheapest on the pricing page rarely is.

What to test during your trial

Not the demo the vendor shows you. Your actual workflows, on your actual client data.

One, book a real client with a multi-service appointment. Color plus cut plus blowout with two overlapping stylists. This test separates real salon software from generic scheduling tools. Boulevard and Mangomint handle overlapping provider assignments natively. Square Appointments doesn’t understand the concept.

Two, process a checkout with product sales, tip split, and commission. Ring up the service, add two retail products, split the tip between stylist and assistant, calculate commission. If this takes more than 60 seconds or requires manual math, the POS isn’t salon-ready. Vagaro and Rosy handle commission splits natively. Square Appointments doesn’t track commissions at all.

Three, run the no-show and cancellation workflow. Book a test appointment, mark it as a no-show, apply the cancellation fee. Check whether the system automatically sends the no-show fee notification and whether the fee actually posts to the client’s card. Boulevard and Fresha handle automated no-show billing. Some competitors require manual invoice creation.

Four, check the client profile after three visits. Look at what data the system captured automatically versus what your front desk had to enter manually. Color formulas, product preferences, rebooking cadence, lifetime spend. Mangomint and Boulevard build rich client histories automatically. Square and Booksy capture only transaction data.

Five, export everything. Client list, appointment history, product sales, financial reports. Try pulling 12 months of data into a CSV. If the export requires a support ticket or omits key fields (formulas, notes, visit history), your client data is trapped in the platform. Test this before signing any annual contract.

Commission tracking and payroll reality

Salon economics run on commissions, tip splits, and product sales incentives. Most salon software handles booking well. Fewer handle the financial side of managing stylists.

Vagaro is the standout here. Built-in payroll, commission tracking across service and retail, tip management, and W-2/1099 generation in one platform. No separate Gusto subscription. No exporting to Excel for your accountant. For a 10-stylist salon running commission-based compensation, this eliminates 2-4 hours of monthly payroll admin.

Boulevard tracks commissions and integrates with Gusto for payroll processing. Mangomint takes the same approach, Gusto integration rather than built-in payroll. Zenoti has full payroll for enterprise chains. Rosy handles commission and tip tracking natively but not payroll processing.

Square Appointments, Fresha, GlossGenius, and Booksy do not track stylist commissions. If your compensation model involves tiered commission rates, product sales bonuses, or split tips between senior and junior stylists, these tools will force you into a spreadsheet.

Client retention tools that actually move the needle

The booking part of salon software is commoditized. Every tool on this list handles online scheduling competently. The gap is in what happens after the appointment.

Mangomint’s automated waitlist and gap-filling scheduler is the most operationally useful retention feature in this comparison. When a client cancels, the system automatically offers the slot to waitlisted clients without front desk intervention. That’s real revenue recovery, not a marketing email.

Boulevard’s client profile depth turns repeat visits into a predictable experience. When a client walks in and the stylist already knows their color formula, product preferences, and last three visit notes without asking, the rebooking rate goes up. That data capture happens automatically.

Fresha and Booksy bet on marketplace discovery for retention. The consumer apps keep clients inside the ecosystem. The risk is that clients book “best salon near me” rather than “my salon,” which means loyalty belongs to the platform, not the business.

Vagaro’s marketing suite (email campaigns, text blasts, promotions) is the broadest automated retention toolkit. Birthday discounts, rebooking reminders, and lapsed-client campaigns run without staff involvement.

The open rates on salon marketing emails are typically 2-3x SaaS industry averages because clients actually want to hear about their stylist’s availability.

The 2026 salon software landscape

AI is arriving, but it’s not transformative yet. Zenoti and Mindbody have launched AI-powered marketing and AI front desk assistants. GlossGenius added AI social content suggestions. These features automate tasks (drafting social posts, suggesting appointment times, predicting no-shows) rather than replacing them. The ROI is real but incremental. No salon is choosing software based on AI features in 2026.

Marketplace consolidation is accelerating. Fresha, Booksy, and Mindbody all run consumer-facing marketplaces where clients discover salons. The winner-take-most dynamics mean salons in dense urban markets increasingly need to be listed on at least one marketplace to maintain discoverability. The trade-off is the marketplace’s commission structure and the risk that client loyalty shifts from the salon to the app.

Payment processing lock-in is the new moat. Boulevard, Fresha, GlossGenius, and Booksy all push proprietary payment processing. The processing rates (2.19-2.6% + $0.10-$0.20 per transaction) are competitive with Stripe and Square, but switching away from the platform means rebuilding payment workflows. This is by design. The stickiest salon software in 2026 is the one that handles your money.

Picking the right tool by salon type

The decision reduces to two questions: how many providers, and what’s your monthly card volume.

Solo practitioners (1 provider)

  • Budget-first: Square Appointments (free) or Fresha (free). Card processing fees are the only cost.
  • Looking professional: GlossGenius ($24/mo). The booking pages and branding tools are worth the subscription for client-facing aesthetics.
  • Wants everything in one: Vagaro ($30/mo). Booking, POS, basic marketing, and client management for solo use.

Small salons (2-10 providers)

  • Best value: Rosy ($37-$53/mo). The flat-tier pricing is unbeatable for teams under 10.
  • Best all-around: Vagaro ($40-$120/mo). More features than Rosy, but higher per-calendar cost.
  • Best UX: Mangomint ($165/mo Essentials). Premium pricing, but the automation reduces front desk overhead.
  • Marketplace-dependent: Booksy ($60-$300/mo). Worth it only if the Booksy marketplace drives measurable new client volume.

Mid-size salons and spas (10-30 providers)

  • Operations-focused: Mangomint ($245/mo Standard) or Boulevard ($175/mo Essentials). Both handle complex scheduling and client management at this scale.
  • Budget-focused: Vagaro ($120-$200/mo) or Rosy ($53-$69/mo). More affordable, less polished UX.

Multi-location and enterprise (30+ providers, 3+ locations)

  • Salon and spa chains: Zenoti. The only platform in this list designed for franchise reporting and cross-location operations.
  • Fitness-wellness hybrid: Mindbody. Class scheduling depth that salon-specific tools lack.
  • Premium multi-location salons: Boulevard ($295-$410/mo). Enterprise-enough for 3-10 locations without the Zenoti implementation overhead.

Tools we considered but excluded

Acuity Scheduling. Generic scheduling tool owned by Squarespace. Handles appointments competently but lacks salon-specific features (commissions, formulas, chair-level scheduling, product inventory). Better suited for consultants and coaches than beauty professionals.

Schedulicity. Adequate booking platform for solo practitioners. Limited scalability, dated interface, and a shrinking market position make it hard to recommend over GlossGenius or Fresha in 2026.

Phorest. Salon-focused platform popular in the UK and Ireland. Limited US market presence, fewer G2 reviews than US competitors, and pricing that requires a sales call. Worth evaluating if your salon operates in Europe.

Timely. Clean scheduling tool from New Zealand, strong in Australia and NZ markets. Limited US payment processing options and a smaller integration ecosystem narrow its appeal for US-based salons.

Salon Iris. Legacy salon software with a loyal user base. The desktop-first architecture and dated cloud experience put it behind browser-native competitors on usability.

Frequently asked questions

What is the cheapest salon management software for a small salon?

Fresha and Square Appointments are both free for core booking and client management. Between the two, Fresha is more salon-specific with features like inventory and marketing, while Square offers a stronger POS and payment ecosystem.

For teams over 4 stylists, Rosy at $53/mo for up to 10 users is the cheapest paid option with salon-specific features like commission tracking.

Can I switch salon software without losing my client data?

Most platforms support CSV import of client lists (names, contact info, appointment history). Color formulas, detailed visit notes, and product preferences typically require manual re-entry. Boulevard, Mangomint, and Vagaro offer onboarding support that includes data migration assistance.

Before switching, export everything from your current platform and verify the export includes all custom fields you need.

Do I need salon-specific software or can I use a generic scheduling tool?

If you track color formulas, manage stylist commissions, handle product back-bar inventory, or need chair-level resource management, you need salon-specific software. Generic tools like Calendly, Acuity, or even Square Appointments lack these features entirely.

If you are a solo massage therapist or esthetician who only needs booking and payments, a generic tool works fine.

Which salon software has the best client booking app?

Fresha, Booksy, and Mindbody operate consumer marketplaces where clients actively search for nearby services. These marketplaces drive the most organic new-client traffic. Boulevard and Mangomint offer polished web-based booking experiences but do not operate consumer-facing discovery marketplaces.

For client-facing booking page design, GlossGenius produces the most visually polished pages.

Is Mindbody worth the price for a salon that doesn’t offer fitness classes?

For a pure hair salon, nail studio, or barbershop, Mindbody is overpriced. The platform’s strength is class-based scheduling and membership management for fitness-wellness hybrid businesses.

At $139/mo Starter, Vagaro ($30/mo), Fresha (free), and Mangomint ($165/mo with far better UX) all offer equivalent or superior salon-specific functionality at similar or lower cost.

How we research salon management platforms

CEOPickz does not accept paid placements in rankings. Tool order is determined by a weighted assessment of G2 review volume and satisfaction, pricing accessibility, feature depth relative to the target buyer segment, and integration ecosystem breadth.

G2 ratings and review counts were read from live G2 product pages in August 2026. Pricing was verified from vendor pricing pages, G2 pricing pages, and established third-party pricing databases (Capterra, Software Advice) on the same date.

Where vendors do not publish pricing (Zenoti), estimates are drawn from buyer reports and third-party pricing analysis sites, with ranges noted.

This comparison does not include tools we have not researched. The excluded section above documents tools we evaluated and the specific reasons they did not make the primary list.

For corrections, vendor disputes, or feedback on this comparison, email hello@ceopickz.com . Pricing and G2 data are verified each time this page is updated; next scheduled refresh is November 2026.
